Charley's is my kind of place - Willie Nelson

Take a step back in time and find true Aloha.

Charley's Restaurant and Saloon, established in 1969, is an award-winning, Maui Landmark.

Charley’s is a reflection of the culture of Maui, the essence of its foods, and the warm spirit of entertainment and Aloha.

We welcome you to a favorite community gathering place and celebrated destination spot.

Charley’s is located in Paia, Maui, Hawaii; a former sugar-plantation town that serves as the crossroads to the North Shore of Maui.  Known for its large waves and ideal conditions for surfing, windsurfing and kite-boarding, the North Shore of Maui is a water playground. The North Shore is also known for its rainforests, waterfalls and hiking.

Paia maintains its small-town, old Hawaii charm, and is now a bustling destination with restaurants, bars, shopping, coffee and gelato.

At Charley’s you never know who might be sitting next to you. It’s long been a favorite hang-out for surfers, adventurers, writers, hippies, rock stars, artists, business leaders, celebrities, and all types, looking to get away and find the ultimate in Maui hospitality.

Willie Nelson’s Favorite Spot on Maui! See him at work at Charley’s here!

On Tuesday, August 13th, 2013, three true greats of American music - Joe Caro (guitar), Hutch Hutchinson (bass) and Steve Gadd (drums) - will join forces for a night of stellar music delivered in an intimate Maui setting. The all-star trio will step onto the low key, wood-wrapped stage at Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon in Paia at 8:30pm and go wherever their spirits and the Ho‘okipa tradewinds take them. No tour crews, managers or bright lights - just three kindred souls (including two north Maui residents - Caro and Hutchinson) stoked about the chance to perform together and connect with the Maui/Hawaii community.
Charley’s will feature cabaret seating and dinner service until 9pm with low tables directly in front of the stage, high-tops behind that area and standing room space beside the tables. Sound equipment will be provided by Maui’s own, Village Audio.
Meet the Musicians:
Steve Gadd - Many hail Gadd as the greatest drummer on the planet. It is difficult to overly embellish his accolades and his place in modern day music. For over forty years, the most popular and talented artists in the world have sought out Gadd to record and tour with them - Eric Clapton, Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Al Jarreau and on and on (Discography). Whether it’s jazz, soul, funk, folk or virtually any genre, more artists trust Gadd to lock in the groove than any other beat maker. A short list of hits recorded with Gadd includes Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” Steely Dan’s “Aja,” Rickie Lee Jones “Chuck E’s In Love,” Paul Simon’s “Late in the Evening,” Bonnie Raitt’s “Angel from Montgomery” and Simon and Garfunkel’s live album, “Concert in Central Park.” "Every drummer wants to play like Gadd because he plays perfect," Chick Corea once said. "He has brought orchestral and compositional thinking to the drum kit while at the same time having a great imagination and a great ability to swing."

Hutch Hutchinson - While Hutchinson is best known for backing Bonnie Raitt in the recording studio and on tour - a position he’s held for the past 30+ years - his time with Raitt only scratches the surface of his musical dexterity and esteemed position in American music. Prior to connecting with Raitt, Hutchinson spent years anchoring the groove of New Orleans rhythmic giants, The Neville Brothers. Take those two formidable positions and add to them recordings with a literal who’s who of stars, and you begin to get a sense of the respect Hutchinson holds amongst his peers. The list of top tier artists Hutch has recorded with includes Brian Wilson, Al Green, B.B. King, Elton John, Hank Williams Jr., Ringo Starr, Patti LaBelle, Roy Orbison, Boz Scaggs, Randy Newman, etc., etc.

Joe Caro - Caro’s career has enjoyed a similar trajectory as his two playing partners at Charley’s. Growing up in New York, he didn’t have to go far to find the best recording studios in the world and many of the best recording gigs as well - recording with Bette Midler, Bobby McFerrin, Michael McDonald and a host of other stars. Also like Gadd and Hutchinson, Caro honed his musical mastery by logging countless hours on the road - touring extensively with Dr. John, Carly Simon, Stanley Clarke and on and on. New York City has long been an epicenter (if not THE epicenter) of the music industry, and until his recent move to Maui, Caro was ensconced at its pinnacle for decades.
The common thread that ties these three artists together is a true love of music. Yes, talent is a pre-requisite to success in their field, but their unbridled passion is what first opened the doors to the highest grounds in music. It is also what has enabled them to enjoy such remarkable longevity. And it is what brings them together on August 13th - to play for the pure fun of it, surrounded by people who they know will enjoy soaking up the sounds as much as they’ll enjoy creating them. And best not forget the final ingredient of the night - Charley’s rich history of chicken-skin musical moments including unforgettable performances by the likes of Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. It’s impossible to predict when lightning will strike, but rest assured, when Joe Caro, Hutch Hutchinson and Steve Gadd unite and get this unique gumbo simmering, ear-to-ear smiles will take over all in the room.
