Jazz guitarist Jacob Deaton independently releases his freshman album, “Tribulation.” An album release party will be held Sept. 23 and 24 at Churchill Grounds Jazz Café, 660 Peachtree St., Atlanta, Ga. For over three years, Jacob Deaton has been playing clubs and restaurants all over Atlanta and the Southeast, dazzling audiences with his fretboard acrobatics and making a name for himself amongst Atlanta jazz elite. When Deaton joined The Justin Chesarek Quintet (Justin Chesarek, drums; Craig Shaw Bass; Akeem Marable, alto saxophone; Nick Rosen, keys) two years ago, he began writing tunes for their regular Wednesday night gig at Atlanta’s hallowed jazz club, Churchill Grounds, and has cultivating his tunes ever since. Deaton walked into the studio with his original bandmates and laid down six inspired tracks that will keep you humming for days. It’s not just straight-ahead, swing, or bop. It’s an original ATL Jazz revival played by five smokin’ musicians. The album’s title track is intense, building tension from the first note and releasing when Marable steps up to the mic and unleashes a boat load of energy. “Eclipse takes the listener on an easy ride, with a lively, bouncing melody. The rest of the album progresses naturally and is assembled well, making it easy to just hit play and listen, without skipping from track to track. “I named the album ‘Tribulation’ because every one of the tunes provided a challenge, whether it was improvisational or compositional,” Deaton says. Deaton calls this album a “gateway record,” because as he wrote it, he was able to clearly see the direction his music is taking him. The result is a jivin’ album that you’ll find yourself humming along to and marveling at the high level of improvisation. Deaton is a graduate of Atlanta Institute of Music and studied under pianist Randy Hoexter and guitarist Trey Wright and Corey Christiansen. Aside from his solo work, his band The Indie Revenge has been lighting up stages all over town and was recently named “Top 5 Bands to Watch” by Creative Loafing.
